Every qigong class teaches form, yet what happens when you get stuck, or "your body doesn't do that?"

We have been contemplating the use of our backs, feet and side to side movements as part of the continuing summer classes. When students come to class with a non-compliant shoulder, or elbow, or knee or foot, then it can be most difficult to move into the practice. Here is where I offer practical advice on how to move and what to move. For example, maybe we start every arm raise with an elbow, instead of using your shoulder. This is a very different way of thinking about the body. We think "elbow" and "lift from the back". This sets an intention and then the body makes different connections. This in turn eases pain in a joint and does not irritate an injured part. For those with no physical pain or limitations, then the focus might be on the breath. Big breathing, little breathing, controlled breathing. This is a practice you eventually combine with the qigong movements. There is always something more to explore. When you are adept with moving and breathing then you can begin to focus on sensation happening inside. Many students find a wave action begin to take place. This would be "connecting with Qi". How long does it take to get there? I cannot tell you. What I can tell you is that each time you practice, you discover something about yourself. Discover something about your mind and the way it thinks, discover something about the essence of who you are. You may begin to discover you are "more qi, less me". What a relief that can be! The process is in the practice of qigong and the journey you take each time you practice. There is no "goal" of qigong. There is benefit to yourself as you develop your three treasures: your Jing, Qi and Shen, your body-self, your energy, your spirt. Drop in and join me for these summer classes at:

What i have been up to I have just returned from my annual summer workshop with my teachers, Dr. Liu Dong and Master Liu He. Their inspiration has no boundaries. I am now certified to teach "Qigong of the Great White Crane", look for the form this fall. I also master certified "Jade Woman Qigong". This means I can train and certify a student to teach the Jade Woman form. Interested? I am happy to discuss this potential with you! While there I learned three new forms: Iron Shirt Buddha, Mu Wang Dui and Training the Hun & Limiting the Po. Each of these Qigong forms continue to reveal their gifts to me. Food as medicine As we enter in to late summer heat, eat food to cool the blood which will help you feel more cool even when the temperatures skyrocket.

So, cool the blood with daily intake of dark leafy greens lightly cooked, consume watermelon, celery, edemame, and cucumber. Limit ice cold drinks and iced foods. Your stomach has to warm the cold up before digesting the liquid or food, this creates more heat in the body as the stomach amps up its churning capacity. Drink mint and peppermint tea as well as wheat grass juice which cools as well as nourishes blood. Room temperature water is best, yet if you are really craving something cold, try eating a slice of fresh ginger with or after the cold drink to nix the affect of cold in the stomach. Drink one glass of water first thing in the morning to activate the Stomach Qi. You can continue to cleanse the Liver by eating half a fresh grapefruit. Then after a bit, eat your regular breakfast.

Feng shui

Feng Shui is the art of placement. How the energy of your home or office or any surrounding affects you. This is the year of the Mud Pig. According to Chinese cosmology, this is the ending year of a 12 year cycle of the 12 animals in their respective sequence. The significance of this is that we need to clean our house for the rest of the year to get ready for the next 12 year cycle. Then, for the next 12 years you will continue to evolve, grow and create new energy, without the additional baggage of the last 12 years. So, it is very important for the next 6 months to "let go of the old". Cleaning your house can mean internal cleansing of the Heart, Kidney, Liver, Spleen and Lung through qigong practice. This type of cleaning also roots out old ideas of what our health should look like. This is very important idea as when we cleanse old energy as thoughts in the mind and cell memory in the physical body, we create space for change to happen. External cleaning can mean the actual cleaning of your house and office spaces. Begin to let go of anything you no longer use. Then new ideas can happen and connect to you. When there is so much stuff in the way and your house is already full, then there is nowhere to accept new energy. Energy can mean a new idea or something in the form of a material good. When we clear clutter and clean the dust, then new energy, ideas and people come into our lives. When we 'dust" our brain, it can make new connections to helpful thoughts. This gives extra insight and inspiration into our life. This new energy is like a gift to ourselves. A gift from nature and the universe in evolving our health, our relationships and our connection to the greater world.
